Placenta Encapsulation Services

The placenta is an incredible organ that grows inside your body to sustain your pregnancy and nourish your baby, and plays a role in hormonal processes that initiate breastfeeding. It is honored in different ways in different cultures around the world.

More scientific research needs to be done to determine exactly how and why placenta consumption is beneficial, and results vary from person to person. However most moms who consume their placenta will tell you that they experienced a decrease in feelings of postpartum depression and anxiety, hormonal balance, and a positive impact on milk production.*

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is placenta encapsulation?

It is the process of preparing your placenta for consumption - via edible capsules - after birth.

How is it done?

There are a couple different processes for placenta encapsulation. The one that I offer is often referred to as the Traditional Method, as it adopts concepts from Traditional Chinese Medicine. This method includes steaming the placenta and then dehydrating it, followed by grinding it up into powder and putting the powder into edible capsules.

Where do you do it, and how long does it take?

I complete the entire encapsulation process in the clients home kitchen over a 2 day period.

How soon do I need to contact you?

You can hire me at any time during your pregnancy! In your 3rd trimester I will contact you about the process of transporting your placenta to your home, and answer any questions you have about the encapsulation process. Please contact me at least within 12 hours of the birth of your baby/placenta.

What supplies do I need to have at home?

All you need to have available is a countertop, a sink, and at least one burner on the stove. I will provide all of the supplies and materials needed to complete the encapsulation, including (but not limited to) cleaning and sanitizing materials, pot and steamer basket, dehydrator, knives and cutting board, garbage bags, and personal protective equipment.

How many capsules will I get?

The amount of capsules largely depends on the size of your placenta. A small-to-average size placenta may yield around 80-130 pills. An above-average or large placenta may yield 150 pills or more.

Is this safe?

My trainings include: Postpartum Placenta Specialist training via ProDoula, OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens for Placenta Encapsulators training via Biologix, and First Principles for Food Handlers training via the National Registry of Food Safety Professionals. Since there is no governing body that regulates placenta encapsulation, I do everything in my power and ability based on my knowledge and training, to practice safe handling procedures, bloodborne pathogen awareness, and best hygiene and sanitization practices during the entire encapsulation process. Having the client pack up and transport their own placenta, completing this entire process in the clients home, as well as utilizing the Traditional Method (steaming & dehydrating) as opposed to Raw Method, all give added protection against bacterial contamination.
